Pro-Life Book Reviews: Life is Winning

If you are interested in the American political process, elections, legislative intrigues, judicial actions, and the like, especially as they have to do with our Pro-Life Movement, I have a great book recommendation for you: Life is Winning – Inside the Fight for the Unborn Children and Their Mothers by Marjorie Dannenfelser, President of Susan B. Anthony List.

In her book, Ms. Dannenfelser illuminates the political history of abortion in the United States. She explains the court cases that have most influenced abortion policy in our country and she identifies the politicians who have impacted that policy for good or for ill.

The details of the formation of the Susan B Anthony List, whose purpose is to end abortion by electing leaders and advocating for laws that save lives, are fascinating. The journey has been through many peaks and valleys and has included many broken promises and a few surprise heros.

Ms. Dannenfelser and the SBA List have fought hard to help conservative politicians understand that Americans do care about life and it will influence their voting. In Chapter 11, she shares the realization that (in the run-up to 2012 election, particularly) [GOP leadership] “saw the pro-life movement as an asset to be managed, not a partner in setting the agenda.” A lesson they learned time after time as elections at all levels were either won or lost was, “The pro-life agenda deserves to be integral to every campaign and governing agenda.”

The book was released just prior to the 2020 election, so does not address the most recent developments with the Biden administration or the current Supreme Court consideration of Dobbs v Jackson, but that doesn’t make it any less valuable. It is a fantastic overview of where we’ve been and how we’ve gotten to the present situation with regard to U.S. abortion policy.

I have always said, and continue to maintain, that we (the Pro-Life Movement) cannot rely solely on the federal or state governments to rid our nation of abortion. It is our responsibility to have the hard, one-on-one conversations aimed at converting hearts and minds to an acceptance that all human life has dignity and deserves protection. That said, it is encouraging to know that the battle for life continues to be fought in the legislatures, the courts, and the White House as well. This book provides that encouragement, and indeed hope, that LIFE IS WINNING.
