Surprisingly to some of us, one of the obstacles we face in promoting a culture of life is supposedly “Christian” pastors who endorse abortion.
One such pastor in the news lately, as noted by LifeNews, is Rev. Rebecca Todd Peters.
Rev. Peters says “I felt God’s presence with me as I made the decision to end two pregnancies and I felt no guilt, no shame, no sin.” Such a response to abortion is at odds with Christian ideas, both Old Testament and New Testament. Absent from her testimony is any sense of Psalm 139:13-14 (“You formed my inmost being; you knit me in my mother’s womb. I praise you, because I am wonderfully made; wonderful are your works! My very self you know.”) or Luke 18:15-16 (“People were bringing even infants to him that he might touch them, and when the disciples saw this, they rebuked them. Jesus, however, called the children to himself and said, ‘Let the children come to me and do not prevent them; for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these.”).
Instead of recognizing God’s hand in the conception of a child, she states: “A forced pregnancy or birth is not holy.” She denies the biological reality that human life starts at conception/fertilization and the theological reality that God is the author of life.
As noted in the article: “She said she believes abortion for any reason is morally justified, and the idea that abortion is wrong is ‘rooted in Christianity’s patriarchal vision of womanhood,’ according to the report.”
One wonders why she is a “Christian” pastor.
However, herein lies the difficulty. There are many people who self-identify as Christian who agree with Rev. Peters.
Our difficulty will be communicating to them the truth that Christianity is all about supporting and defending life, not about destroying it via the brutal murder of preborn children.
