Beyond Roe v. Wade

Legal analysis and commentary that has been published after the U.S. Supreme Court heard arguments on the Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health case on December 1 seem to be concluding, as best I can tell, that the overturn of Roe v. Wade is on the horizon.

According to an article in the latest National Catholic Register, the conclusion is held by pro-abortion advocates as well as pro-life advocates.

So lets say it happens. What will it mean for us? For many long years we have fought the battle to reverse Roe v. Wade and Doe v. Bolton. It would certainly seem that we could declare victory.

Yes, victory can be declared, but only in a battle, not in the overall war. In the end our struggle is not just to overturn a couple of court cases but to rebuild a respect for life throughout our community, state and nation such that the idea of abortion will become unthinkable.

Ironically, the overturn of these two court cases will actually make matters in Colorado worse as our current state legislature has already signaled its intent to enshrine abortion in Colorado law to counter the reversal of the federal law.

Consequently, the new situation for us in Colorado will look a lot like the old situation, only more intense. We will rise to the challenge!
