Let’s Look at the Facts

Recently you may have received the winter newsletter from Colorado Right to Life, a state organization in Denver.  You may have read their page 2 article: “Welcome! to our Colorado Springs Members!      The article claimed the reason we disassociated from them was that they had been kicked out of NRLC.      That was NOT the issue.        Rather, it was the May 23, 2007, full page ad in the Colorado Springs Gazette attacking Dr. James Dobson, Focus on the Family, National Right to Life, Priests for Life, the Family Research Council and other prolife organizations.  (The ad is still on their website.)      They publicly accused very good people of supporting “evil.”  The state organization’s reasoning was that anyone celebrating the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision upholding the ban on partial birth abortion was “willing to call good evil and evil good.”        Disagreement among people on various issues and approaches is to be expected within any organization or movement.  However, we do not believe in public actions that fragment efforts to end abortion, but rather, a unified approach and respect for all who are in this fight to preserve life.      A minor point – at the time of our disaffiliation from the state organization, a part of the agreement was that they would have access to our mailing list.  In their article, they imply they only recently got this list.  Actually, it has been in their hands since September.      It is good to see the state organization supporting the ballot initiative for a personhood amendment.      We also support it here in the Pikes Peak area.  Our office is a distribution point for petitions.  Our local volunteers have been getting signatures at churches, stores and public events since November.        We continue to wish the state organization success in their efforts to stop abortion.

Senators, Attitudes & Prolife Issues      During a February debate, Senator Barack Obama said his biggest mistake was voting with a unanimous Senate to help save Terri Schiavo from starvation and dehydration.      Shortly before Terri died her 14-day-long painful death 2005, Congress approved legislation allowing her case to be taken to federal courts in her family’s attempt to stop the removal of her food and water.       Senator Obama would take back his vote.      On March 13, the U.S. Senate voted on a budgetary amendment to support parental involvement when minors are taken across state lines for abortions to avoid being in states which require such parental involvement.       Both Senators Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton voted against the amendment which would have supported parental rights.      Colorado Senator Ken Salazar also opposed the measure.  Senator Wayne Allard supported it.

1 in  4 Teenaged Girls has an STD !! An annual study, done by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDCP), was revealed recently in The Gazette, (3/12/08, A-1). For the analysis, the teens were tested for human papillomavirus (HPV), chlamydia, trichomoniasis, and herpes.  The most prevalent disease was HPV; of those infected, 15% had more than one STD. The symptoms of chlamydia often are silent, but left untreated, can cause irreversible damage, particularly to fertility.  Overall figures could be slightly higher because syphilis, HIV and gonorrhea were not included, nor did the study include boys!  Dorothy Furgerson, a medical director at Planned Parenthood, encouraged better sex education programs, “so that young people who …have sex do protect themselves against STDs.”        [How many years have we heard that?] ed. Valerie Huber, director of the National Abstinence Education Association, pointed out.  “Teens are erroneously taught that a condom makes sex safe when we see that  1 in 4 teen girls is infected with an STD, it becomes clear that the contraception-based approach taught in 75% of U.S. Schools is failing young people.             The CDC study shows that the sexual health of teens should be paramount.  Not just for health, but for economic concerns.   There are 19 million cases of STDs in the U.S. costing the health care system $15 billion a year. Almost half occur among the 14 – 25 age group.  Yet, the CDC continues to recommend each time…. HPV vaccines for ages 11 – 26, (which only covers HPV!), annual screenings for sexually active girls younger than 25, and of course “better” sex education.  Since the increase in abstinence education over the last decade, the teen birthrate has declined 50%, noted Project Reality in its 2007 study.  Please see their website: www.projectreality.org  Abstinence programs also emphasize principles of self-restraint, self-esteem, future goals, long-term commitment, and healthy relationship skills. Isn’t this what we’d like for our kids and grandkids?                          See: www.abstinenceassociation.org

Racism Alive/Well at Planned Parenthood      A set of recordings was released recently that could prove disastrous for Planned Parenthood’s (PP) ties with the African-American community.   Lila Rose, a pro-life student and reporter at UCLA, launched an undercover investigation aimed at exposing the racism of the nation’s largest abortion merchant.  With the help of an actor, she contacted PP clinics in seven states, inquiring if they would be willing to accept a donation earmarked for the abortion of black babies.  The results were jaw-dropping.       Rose discovered that every clinic agreed. Not one employee objected or questioned the request, even when the actor insisted that the purpose was to “lower the number of black people” in America.       The actual telephone recordings are available at: http://www.frc.org/get.cfm?i=LK08B57&f=WA08B46  One transcript from an Idaho clinic is as follows:      Actor: I really faced trouble with affirmative action and I don’t want my kids to be disadvantaged against black kids.     Planned Parenthood:  Yes, absolutely.     Actor:  And we don’t, you know, we just think the less black kids out there the better.     Planned  Parenthood: (laughs) Understandable, understandable… This is the first time I’ve had a donor call and make this kind of request, so I’m excited and want to make sure I don’t leave anything out.       Students at UCLA were so infuriated by the investigation that they are petitioning the university to cut all affiliation with Planned Parenthood.       What few people realize is that PP has a history of racism since the earliest days, when founder Margaret Sanger advocated negative eugenics and spoke to a woman’s branch of the KKK. (Margaret Sanger, An Autobiography, 1938,p.336-367).              The organization has managed for decades to cover its tracks… and the facts.  That task has just been made much more difficult.              Abortion has taken the lives of over 14 million innocent black children – a national tragedy that has united and mobilized African-Americans across party, state, and financial lines.                                               Family Research Council. frc.org , 2-28-2008

“IDOL GIVES BACK” PROJECT SUPPORTS ABORTION      In March, 2007, the popular TV show, “American Idol,” unveiled its “Idol Gives Back” project, to “raise awareness of the effects of poverty on children and young people.”  That project generated more than $75 million.      The second “Idol Gives Back” program will air on April 9, again supporting UNICEF and Save the Children, both strongly pro-abortion organizations.      According to Internat’l Organizations Research Group (IORG) UNICEF has funded a program run by the militantly pro-abortion Population Council, which holds the U.S. patent for the abortion pill, RU-486.        UNICEF policy is to “Promote and expand access to sexual and reproductive health services,” which includes making condoms available and accessible for everybody.  Also, “reproductive health services” is a code phrase and always includes abortion       In October, 2002, The Calgary Herald reported that with UNICEF “…hundreds of thousands of children are still dying of TB or malaria, or because they don’t have clean water…yet they have IUDs.”      In 2001, Save the Children worked with Planned Parenthood, the Population Action Council, and the pro-abortion Audubon Society on its 5-year “Planet Campaign”.       “It is laudable that the people involved with ‘American Idol’ want to help the poor,” says Doug Scott, of Life Decisions Internat’l  “But it is tragic that they…choose to do so through groups like UNICEF and Save the Children.”      Many people do not know that “Idol” creator, Simon Cowell, is the chief executive officer of Internat’l Save the Children.       Scott contends:  “We are caring people who want …to help those less fortunate, but…through organizations that do not view the killing of human beings as a ‘solution’ to poverty…”                                         Excerpts: LifeSiteNews.com, March 10, 2008

“No More Federal Funds for PP”      Three Congressmen are urging the cutoff of federal funds to Planned Parenthood (PP) because of abortion and “teenwire.”      At the request of Cybercast News Service, Rep. Doug Lamborn (R-CO) was joined by Rep. Steve King (R-IA) and Rep. Joseph Pitts (R-PA) in reviewing materials posted on PP’s website:  teenwire.com      Supposedly, teenwire provides “medically accurate” information about sex to teenagers.  Along with that, however, comes the encouraging of sexual activity [“safe,” of course!] and pornography.       In 2006, PPFA reported $305.3 million income from federal grants and contracts, 34% of its annual income!

More Numbers…Post Abortion Trauma      According to Priscilla K. Coleman, Ph.D. who has published her studies on the psychological effects of abortion:      “Abortion is one of the most common medical procedures in the U.S and it is experienced at least once by approximately 35% of women by age 45.                 (Finer & Henshaw, 2006)       “There is consensus among most social and medical science scholars that a mini-mum of 10 to 30% of women who abort suffer from serious, prolonged    negative psycho- logical consequences (Adler et., 1990; Bradshaw & Slade, 2003; Major & Cozzarelli, 1992: Zolese & Blacker, 1992.)

“With nearly 1.2 million U.S. abortions each year in the U.S. (Boonstra.et., 2006), the conservative 10% figure yields approximately 130,000 new cases of mental health problems each year.”Testimony submitted to the Health Subcommittee, Committee on Energy and Commerce,  US House of Rep. 5/1/07 in favor of HR 20
