STATEMENT BY THE NATIONAL RIGHT TO LIFE COMMITTEE
ON ABORTION “DEAL” ON HEALTH CARE LEGISLATION

WASHINGTON — (Sunday, March 21, 2010, 6 PM EDT) –  In response to today’s announcement regarding an agreement between Rep. Bart Stupak (D-Mi.) and President Obama on the pending health care bill (H.R. 3590), the following statement was issued by the National Right to Life Committee (NRLC), the federation of right-to-life organizations in the 50 states:

The National Right to Life Committee (NRLC) remains strongly opposed to the Senate-passed health bill (H.R. 3590).  A lawmaker who votes for this bill is voting to require federal agencies to subsidize and administer health plans that will pay for elective abortion, and voting to undermine longstanding pro-life policies in other ways as well.  Pro-life citizens nationwide know that this is a pro-abortion bill.  Pro-life citizens know, and they will be reminded again and again, which lawmakers deserve their gratitude for voting against this pro-abortion legislation.

The executive order promised by President Obama was issued for political effect.  It changes nothing.  It does not correct any of the serious pro-abortion provisions in the bill.  The president cannot amend a bill by issuing an order, and the federal courts will enforce what the law says.

To elaborate:  The order does not truly correct any of the seven objectionable pro-abortion provisions described in NRLC’s March 19 letter to the House of Representatives, which is posted here.

Regarding Community Health Centers (CHCs), NRLC has documented the problem created by H.R. 3590 here.

Prof. Robert Destro, a professor of law and former dean of the Columbus School of Law at the Catholic University of America, and an expert on abortion-related litigation, has sent lawmakers a letter explaining why the bill opens the door to direct federal funding of abortion in Community Health Centers.

Prof. Destro clearly explains why it is the statutory language that will govern.

Regarding the new program to provide tax credits to purchase private insurance, the executive order merely tinkers with the formalities of a bookkeeping scheme under which federal subsidies will pay for plans that cover elective abortion — a break from the longstanding principles of the Hyde Amendment.

The order does nothing at all to mitigate the other abortion-related problems described in the NRLC letter, dealing with bill provisions that create dangerous regulatory mandate authorities, revise Indian health programs, and create pools of directly appropriated funds that are not covered by existing restrictions on funding of abortion.  Nor can the order correct the omission from the pending legislation of the necessary conscience-protection language that had been included in House-passed health care legislation last November (the “Weldon language”).

For additional information regarding the abortion-related components of the legislation, and NRLC’s assessment of the gravity of these issues, please refer to the March 19 letter linked above, and other materials posted on the NRLC website.

Is the Senate Healthcare Bill Pro-Life?

In a word:  NO !!!

With many thanks to James Bell of American Principles Project (APP) for stating this so succinctly (and to Thomas Peters of APP for sharing the info) … here are some features of the Senate Healthcare Bill that make it pro-abortion:

  • The Senate Health Care Reform Bill spends taxpayer dollars on health care plans that fund abortions.
  • The bill spends $12 billion on Community Health Centers that Planned Parenthood will be eligible to receive.
  • This bill also gives the Secretary of Health and Human Services Kathleen Sebelius the right to declare abortion as a pre-existing condition to be covered under every health care plan in the federal exchange under the Mikulski Amendment.
  • It eliminates conscience protections for insurance providers, trip-wires the direct funding of abortions to potential expiration.
  • Under this bill, everyone — including men and old women — will be forced to pay at least $1 (to be raised under jurisdiction of Congress) to a fund for “reproductive rights” that will cover 100% of the cost for anyone who gets elective abortions.

James puts it in a nutshell:  “To say that the Senate Health Care Reform Bill is the greatest expansion of abortion since Roe v. Wade is an understatement.”

FOLKS, please phone or email your Congressman!!!  Urge them to stand up for the sanctity of life, and to STOP Federal funding of abortion (click here for phone #’s of US Representatives for the state of CO).

STOP Federal Funding of Abortion!!!

Dear Friend for Life,

As expected, President Obama and his ideological allies have announced their plan to ram through the House of Representatives the incredibly anti-life Senate bill they passed in the wee hours of Christmas Eve.

It doesn’t matter to these people that Americans overwhelmingly oppose Obamacare because they do NOT want federal funding of elective abortion.

It doesn’t matter to them that Americans do NOT want the radical Medicare cuts and diminished medical services that will inevitably lead to rationing.

It doesn’t matter to them that Americans do NOT want to violate the precious conscience rights of ethical doctors and nurses committed to “do no harm.”

Aiming for a March 20th vote (or March 21 — admin), Obama et al are twisting arms, making deals, and offering bribes…like the just-announced federal-judgeship for Scott Matheson, whose brother, Rep. Jim Matheson, was originally a ‘no’ vote.

United with pro-life groups across the country, we’re fighting to ensure crucial decisions about your health care and coverage remain in your hands, not turned over to bureaucrats.

But all of us, now, must speak up one more time… and with one message!

So even if you’ve contacted your Member of Congress about this in the past, we ask you – at this critical time – to make another call RIGHT NOW.

Strongly urge your Representative to OPPOSE the Senate health care bill.

Say you think it would be inexcusably irresponsible to vote for this awful bill based on feeble and unpersuasive promises about some other bill that might — or more likely, might not — be enacted at some point later on.

P.S. If the Representative’s staff person insists that the bill does not allow federal funding of abortion (a now-familiar ploy), politely point out that you have access to detailed information which proves it does.  Then, share the information from our recent PPCFL Blog Post!

NOTE:  Among other things, the bill contains — buried deep within its 2400 pages — a provision for $7 BILLION (Mr. Obama wants $11 BILLION) for community health centers or CHCs.  Planned Parenthood, the nation’s largest abortion chain, already gets $350 million of our taxes.  Yet it meets the CHC criteria!

A brand new country music star, Matt Kennon, has made headlines with hit single, “The Call.”  CountryMusic Television played the music video for “The Call,” which is now making its way across the nation via the Internet.

Playing his guitar, Kennon sings about the lives of two individuals that would have ended very differently way if a phone call had not been made at the time of great need.

The first is a young, despairing Marine at the point of reaching for his gun to commit suicide. His cell phone rings. It is a friend, asking him to join in a motorboat outing. The girl the Marine likes will be there and she is excited to learn that he might join the fun. He changes his mind about suicide and joins the outing.

The second is the story of two 18-year-olds who “had let a kiss go too far” in the backseat of a car. The young man pressures his girlfriend into scheduling an abortion. As she sits weeping in the “clinic,” her phone rings. Her boyfriend asks her not to have the abortion; tells her he’s bought a ring and wants to marry her.  Kennon’s own birth mother planned to abort him, but her doctor said she was two weeks past the legal limit.  His birth father never intervened – and actually tried to sell Kennon on the adoption black market for $10,000.  Kennon considers his adoptive parents to be his real parents; that he has been very blessed from the day they welcomed him into their lives. He grew up playing drums and singing at Bethel Christian Church in
Conyers, Georgia.

As LifeSiteNews reported this week:

In another powerful and articulate address, the young Toronto native explores the devastating consequences Canada would face if it welcomed euthanasia, and implores Canadians to find ways of caring for suffering patients rather than killing them.

Lia’s speech on abortion last year, which won her school’s public speaking competition, has now been viewed over 850,000 times on Youtube.  The story was LSN’s most popular good news story of 2009, and she shared a revised version of the speech at last year’s National March for Life in Ottawa.
